The Garden Club of America
The purpose of The Garden Club of America is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications, and to restore, improve, and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement.
The Garden Club is comprised of 200 clubs and approximately 18,000 members. The 50 states are divided into 12 zones, roughly according to climatic and growing conditions. The number of clubs within each zone varies. In our zone, the Central Western Zone XI, which extends from Lake Michigan to the Rocky Mountains, there are 18 clubs. Each zone has a Chairman who attends monthly meetings of the National Board. She visits all the clubs in her zone at least once during her two-year term of office and arranges the yearly zone meetings over which she presides.
Of the many committees of The Garden Club of America, some of the most active and influential are Conservation, Horticulture, National Affairs and Legislation, Scholarship, and Founders Fund. The Garden Club of America funds several student scholarship programs and also awards funds to individual clubs for special projects. The Garden Club of Evanston has been a member of The Garden Club of America since 1921.
Membership in The Garden Club of America implies certain privileges and responsibilities. The privileges are: (1) to send representatives to Zone meetings and to the Annual Meeting, (2) to visit gardens at home and abroad from a list provided by GCA, (3) to use the facilities of The Garden Club of America at their Headquarters, (4) to receive the GCA Bulletin, and (5) Active members may be invited to serve on GCA committees. Our responsibilities are to support the work of the National Organization and to cooperate in its various projects and concerns.
